چکیده

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To evaluate and compare the effect of fiber reinforcement on the dimensional changes of heat-cured poly (methyl methacrylate) resin after processing and immersion in water. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three different heat-cure resins were selected for the present study: (1) Nonreinforced heat-cure methyl methacrylate resin, (2) High Impact heat-cured methyl methacrylate resin and (3) Fiberglass reinforced methyl methacrylate resin. Ninety samples were prepared using three different resins and denture bases obtained for the same. The amount of space between the tissue surface and the cast in the anterior, middle and posterior regions is measured after processing and immersion in water for 17 days using a traveling microscope having a least count of 0.001 cm. RESULTS Mean and standard deviation were calculated for the dimensional changes and were subjected to statistical analysis (Student t-test, unpaired). Among the three groups of resins, fiber reinforced heat-cured methyl methacrylate resin was found to be statistically highly significant in terms of dimensional changes when compared with the nonreinforced and high impact heat-cured resins. CONCLUSION Dimensional changes were evident in all the planes in the three groups studied and were in the following decreasing order-fiberglass reinforced heat-cured poly (methyl methacrylate) resin, high impact heat-cured poly (methyl methacrylate) resin and nonreinforced heat-cured poly (methyl methacrylate) resin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The fibers are added in order to increase the strength of acrylic resin. Considering only the strength may in turn affect the dimensional accuracy of the acrylic resin resulting in loss of retention and stability, affecting the fit of the denture.

The effect of SiO2 nano-filler addition into heat-cured poly methyl methacrylate on three-point flexural strength

Background and Aims: Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is still the most commonly used material in prosthetic dentistry. However, there are problems with the mechanical properties of this type of material including low flexural strength. Addition of nanoparticles into the polymer is one way to improve the mechanical properties of acrylic resin. In the present study, the effect of silicon dioxide ...

Denture base polymers, poly methyl methacrylate improved using free radical copolymerization

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most common material used in Prosthodontics. Several studies indicate a breakdown of the number of very high resin bases after 2 to 3 years to avoid breaking bass and several attempts have been made, such as altering the chemical structure of resin by adding causes cross linking or copolymerization. The innovative method for improving the physical properti...

The Effect of TiO2 Nanoparticles on Mechanical Properties of Poly Methyl Methacrylate Nanocomposites (RESEARCH NOTE)

Various applications of nanocomposites were a good motivation to start a study on this wide spreading field of science. Current research is an investigation on incorporating different percentages of TiO2 nanoparticle as reinforcement to a base material which here is poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA). In this study various percentages of TiO2 (0.5, 1 and 2 wt%) were added to pure PMMA and effect o...

The Effect of Cigarette Smoking on Solubility and Disintegration of Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement – An In Vitro Study

Introduction: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a dental restorative material that is prone to solubility and degradation. GIC could degrade in presence of water and desiccation due to environmental factors during setting process and eventually might lead to the failure of the restoration. Cigarette smoking brings a complex chemical mixture to oral cavity that can inhibit polymeriz...
